‘What is everyone else doing?’

‘What does everyone else think?

These are questions we answer in our subconscious everyday without knowing.

When we are unsure how to act, we look to a group to guide our behaviour.

Have you ever gone along with a situation or agreed just because everyone else in the group did? and you didn’t want to be the odd one out?

A lot of us do this every day without realising we are being affected by people and things around us.

  • We check reviews on trip advisor before we go on holiday.
  • We check reviews of products online before we buy them.

There is safety in numbers and our natural inhibition trusts the opinion of others.

  • We quickly clean our house up before anyone arrives because we don’t want to be judged.
  • We make sure our lawn is mowed so our neighbours don’t think we are the messy ones 🤣

We continue to wonder ‘what will others think of me’ and alter our behaviour depending on the answer.

Have you scrolled and ended up liking a picture on Facebook just because loads of your friends or other people have?

Or have you been pressured into eating the work buffet or office cakes because everyone is despite you telling them your eating healthy at the moment and don’t want one?

We are influenced by culture or our social groups (our family and friends), and often we’d rather be wrong within the group, that right by ourselves.

Chances are if your friends are out every weekend drinking, you will be doing the same. If your friends or your partner decide to get into fitness and improve their health, you are more likely to do the same.


The same goes for someone who is overweight, if they have overweight friends or family, there is a very small chance they will ever lose any weight to improve their health.

There is huge pressure to conform with the ‘norms’ of your group.

We become our surroundings.

One of the most effective things you can do to build better behaviours and habits is to surround yourself with people who have the desired behaviour you want. You will find that the strong behaviour of the ‘tribe’ will often override your individual behaviour and you will soon become how you want to be 😁

‘Nothing sustains motivation better than belonging to the tribe’

Your goal changes from your own personal quest to a shared one. You are no longer on your own, and your shared enthusiasm with others in your ‘tribe’ reinforces this desire inside of you.

You can achieve anything you want with the right support around you.
